OK, a history lesson. Sound came along in the mid 1920s. Prior to that,the only laughter one could hear in a cinema was the audience cracking up over Chaplin, Turpin, Keaton and Lloyd. I jhope that clarifies things for you.:)

Of course there was sound as he does occasionaly speak. It just makes it funnier that he doesn't talk to make him seem less ordinary.

Kuchy, This is old -style visual comedy, as it was before sound was invented for film. Vocalising might detract from the humour.
